Keeping teeth and gums healthy and clean is easier to do when your teeth are appropriately spaced and aligned. Sadly, few of us are born with properly aligned teeth and a perfect bite. Orthodontist Dr. Ferdinand Sabelis helps patients of all ages improve their smiles.
Orthodontics is a specialty area in dentistry that concentrates on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of teeth alignment, bite and jaw growth discrepancies. An orthodontist is a dentist who went on to complete an additional two to three years of formal education after graduating from dental school. During that time, they participate in hands-on clinical experiences and learn to treat a variety of smile and bite problems.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic evaluation from an orthodontist upon their seventh birthday. This is an appropriate age because the child has a combination of baby and adult teeth, and the bite is established. Dr. Sabelis won’t recommend treatment at this age in most cases. Instead, your child will become part of our monitoring program, and we will periodically check alignment and bite. We will continue to track growth and determine the ideal time to begin treatment, if recommended.
We make orthodontic treatment convenient for families because all of your child’s dental records are in one location. You also can schedule dental and orthodontic appointments together.
In isolated cases, our orthodontists may recommend interceptive treatment. This type of treatment can include the installation of a rapid palatal expander to widen the palate and create more space, or other appliances to promote or slow jaw growth and improve the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
Interceptive treatment typically eliminates the need for children to undergo more extensive or invasive treatment in the future, such as having adult teeth extracted or undergoing orthognathic (jaw) surgery.
It’s always a good time to improve your smile, regardless of your age. Lots of parents bring their children here for orthodontic treatment and once they see the beautiful results, they request treatment for themselves.
We offer cosmetic orthodontic options, including clear and ceramic brackets, and Invisalign, which is hardly noticeable when the aligners are in place.
The first step in achieving smile improvements is an orthodontic evaluation. Please call today if it is time to schedule your 7-year-old for an initial orthodontic evaluation, or if you would like more information about treatment for yourself.
